Ken Patera wins the Intercontinental Championship

On April 21, 1980, Ken Patera defeated Pat Patterson to win the Intercontinental Championship, making him only the second champion in history. This match is notable for being the first ever time the title was defended, because despite what WWE (then WWF) claims,  Patterson did not win the title in a tournament in Rio De Janeiro. In reality, Patterson was awarded the title after the South American Heavyweight Championship (the fictitious prize for winning the fictitious tournament) was combined with his North American Heavyweight Championship. It is believed that WWE wanted the title to seem more important in scale, which is why its range was changed to all continents instead of just North America.
