"Ravishing" Rick Rude Passes Away
On April 20, 1999, Richard Rood, better known to wrestling fans as "Ravishing" Rick Rude, passed away from heart failure due to an overdose of "mixed medications." While the late 80s-early 90s era of WWE (then WWF) were full of colorful characters, Rude stood out as not only a tremendous in-ring talent, but also a man who the fans loved to hate. Rude fancied himself a mans man, and he was willing to let the men in the audience know just how much better then them he was, usually calling them "fat, out-of-shape sweat-hogs." Rude's biggest success came in 1989 at WrestleMania V when he defeated The Ultimate Warrior to win the Intercontinental Championship. Several future stars credit Rude with inspiring their characters, most notably current NXT star The Velveteen Dream. Thankfully Rude's legacy will live forever since he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017. RIP "Ravishing" one.
