"Rowdy" Roddy Piper is Born
Roderick Toombs, better known to wrestling audiences as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, made his WWE (then WWF) debut in 1984. Piper, like a surprising number of the wrestling greats, debuted as a manager. His mic work was superb at this time, but Piper really started to shine when he became an active in-ring talent. Never one to shy away from controversy, the "Rowdy" one did all sorts of dastardly things, most notably calling out celebrities like Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper. In fact, Piper starred in the main event of the first WrestleMania across the ring from Mr. T. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper is considered by his peers to be the greatest heel in wrestling history, and it is hard to disagree with them. RIP and long live the "Hot Rod."
