"Stone Cold" Steve Austin Walks Out
After months of contract disputes and an eight year career on top with WWE, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin officially walked away from the company on April 16, 2004. The contract disputes in question were specifically about the legal ownership of the "Stone Cold" name, as well as WWE's control over Austin's outside ventures. While Austin leaving was significantly damaging to the company, given that among other things he was their highest merchandise seller, the departure also allowed WWE to experiment on the future stars of the company, such as the soon to be golden goose John Cena.
