The May 20, 2020 edition of NXT was hosted from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.
RESULTS
Segment #1: Tommaso Ciampa is looking for revenge against Karrion Kross and Scarlett
After another enigmatic entrance with Scarlett, and another impressive victory over an upstart NXT talent, Karrion Kross was confronted by the man he attacked on his debut, Tomasso Ciampa. Ciampa welcomed Kross to NXT, informing him that they will be seeing each other again at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
Segment #2: El Hijo del Fantasma wins Group B of the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion Tournament
Both El Hijo del Fantasma and Akira Tozawa put it all on the line in the Group B finals of the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion Tournament. Fantasma quickly realized that using speed for the advantage was not going to work against Tozawa. So he began using his power and size to contain "The Stamina Monster." Tozawa didn't take this lying down though; he withstood the brunt force of Fantasma's attacks, and then came back with his signature grappling. However, Fantasma was still too much for him, eventually finishing him off with the Phantom Driver.
Segment #3: Mia Yim has found new enemies in Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano
While Mia Yim was impressive with a quick, dominant victory over Santana Garrett, the match wasn't the focal point of this segment. That came after the fact, when Candice LeRae and husband Johnny Gargano came down to the ring. They taunted Yim for not being able to pull the wool over Charlotte Flair's eyes a few weeks ago, before launching an all-out assault on "The HBIC." This attack prompted Yim's boyfriend, and current NXT North American Champion, Keith Lee, to come out to scare the attackers away.
Segment #4: Roderick Strong keeps his promise to Dexter Lumis
After The Undisputed Era determined that Roderick Strong would be the one to take Dexter Lumis out, Strong vowed to put him down for good. Strong used his immense grappling prowess to control the match early on, but Lumis' never-ending stare threw him off balance at multiple occasions. Lumis took these breaks in Strong's attacks to take advantage, utilizing his devastating strikes to lay his smaller opponent out. Roderick began using his own strikes, which Lumis took with apparent pleasure. "The Messiah of the Backbreaker" was able to get a quick roll-up on Lumis for the win. After the fact, The Undisputed Era began attacking Lumis, but were quickly stopped by The Velveteen Dream.
Segment #5: Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch defeat Ever-Rise
Despite having top-of-the-class credentials, Ever-Rise (Chase Parker & Matt Martel) was not able to overcome the fast-paced duo of Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. They were tapped out fairly quickly with tandem submission moves.
Segment #6: Group A action of the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion Tournament is not over yet
It was all or nothing for Drake Maverick going into his Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion Tournament match against Kushida tonight. Should he lose, Maverick would be eliminated from the tournament, and would be leaving the company. Luckily for Maverick, he has an underdog's soul and was able to overcome the intense Kushida. Drake had to fight hard because Kushida trapped him in several of his signature submission holds. With Jake Atlas watching at ringside, Drake was able to get a surprise pin-fall victory. Byron Saxton then revealed that, because Maverick, Kushida, and Atlas have the same record in the tournament, that they would be facing each other in a triple threat match next week.
Segment #7: Charlotte Flair stands tall over Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley
Both Rhea Ripley and Io Shirai were looking to make a statement in tonight's match; they were looking to prove why they should be the number one contender for Charlotte Flair's NXT Women's Championship. With Flair watching at ringside, Ripley and Shirai laid into each other. After accidentally running into "The Queen," both competitors looked to get the edge over the other. Flair didn't take too kindly to being run over though, and she quickly interrupted the bout, as if to say neither are worthy to face her for the title.
